8/7/20 Written By Jubilee Vega

After three years, Coasting On Potential is back with a new single ‘In Misery.’ The New York based rock and metalcore group released their newest track ‘In Misery’ on July 31st, which will soon follow their EP in August. ‘In Misery’ discusses the lead singer, Justin DiTomasso, on the loss of both of his parents within the span of one year. With the soon release of their EP, Justin continues to express his emotions throughout the track. ‘In Misery’ is filled with raw lyrics with personal attitudes.

‘In Misery’ begins with a subtle introduction while transitioning into a heavier sound and intense lyrics. The lyrics read “My whole world as it stood, began to make its fall, ruined, by all the nightmares that just keep digging in.” From these lyrics, we can see the message being portrayed of Justin’s world beginning to fall apart due to the loss in his life. He continues on in the track by expressing how faith is guiding him through this song and how misery is all he feels.
Throughout the track, Justin is expressing his personal emotions and how he saw his everyday life moving forward. With lyrics like “Always going through the motions, I can’t see straight, every day blends the same, nothing’s earned, nothing’s gained.” Justin cannot see the day as clear as everything feels distorted and lost. The days continue on to feel the same and he feels that he hasn’t deserved or gained anything moving forward. The track continues with Justin discussing how his pain will never go away, no matter how hard he tries. Justin sings “I serenade this empty space, knowing I’ll never scream enough to fill the void...I felt a pain that won’t decay, or fade away.” The feeling of not being able to let go of the pain is aching enough, but it’s through this track Justin is able to express his pain to others going through something similar.

All in all, ‘In Misery’ is a raw, emotional track with personal lyrics. Coasting On Potential not only used their platform to express their emotions, but also let their fans know that they’re not alone. Fans often look for guidance or emotional support from their artists to cope with their loss. Coasting On Potential brings that to their fans, but also to themselves. Like Justin with his loss, guitarist Nate Pecson explains how all the members have faced a loss in their life and creating music is their outlet in expressing their emotions. I truly enjoyed this track and felt the passionate emotion that Justin and the group were expressing. Coasting On Potential has an EP releasing this month and I cannot wait to see what else they have in store for the EP.
