FUTHERMUCKERS RELEASE THEIR FIRERY NEW EP

Picture

Futhermuckers are a fun group. You can tell it by their spoonerism band name, by their song titles and by their music. The trio formed in spring of 2020 in Benidorm, Spain and quickly began to write songs that would eventually compile into their debut, eponymous EP.  The short, 4-track collection pulls forward from 80’s and 90’s era punk and rock to provide an energetic, daft, and endearing listen.

The first two tracks on the EP highlight the band’s clear punk influences. First track “Old But Still Handsome” has the wit and humor of an early NOFX tune mixed with the energy and self-deprecation of the Descendants. The track begins with an infectious rhythm section intro, the restless bass line ushering the listener into the first verse. The song is a highlight of the EP with funny, relatable lyrics and instrumentals that urge the listeners to get out of their seat.  Second track “Mandy” adds in gang vocals (think Black Flag’s “TV Party”) to the runaway train tempo of this first half. The distorted guitars and the diamond-in-the-rough production fit perfectly for a fast and impactful jam.

The final two tracks on the EP turn from the youth and battery of punk to more rock facing instrumentals. The lyrical style remains unchanged but feels a bit less supported by the stylistic shift. While the 4-song EP is consistent and fun throughout, it’s clear that the trio hit their hardest when pulling forward their punk side. The 3rd track “Men on Pause” is longer than the first two tracks combined, chugging on about a woman experiencing…you guessed it… menopause. Closer “Hey You!” shows some almost grunge influence, with heavy guitars and tight drumming throughout. The song is catchy, and lyrics understandable to anyone who has attempted to pick up someone at a bar.

For such a new band, Futhermuckers show promise. Their strengths reside in their humor, their energy and the catchiness of their songs. Undoubtedly a band that will be fun live, this old but handsome trio is one to look out for when live shows can safely return.
