IDLE WAVE KICK OFF 2021 WITH A DEEP, DRIVING TUNE WITH THEIR NEW SINGLE "MY END"

Picture
After a 2019 split left Idle Wave frontman Guy Battaglia detached from the more traditional pop-punk leanings of the NJ band’s debut EP, the future was open but hazy. The departure of former members, while potentially bittersweet, left more room in the creative space for Guy’s ambitions and experiments. Now, just over a year later, Guy Battaglia and Idle Wave are beginning to find their new legs. We at Punkaganda have discussed how their previous single “Stay” has marked another success in the transition from their previous sound and their newest single “My End” is a follow up that fans of the band and newcomers alike will enjoy.
A snare beat and hi-hat hit the listener like two steps to enter a house before the door swings wide open. Immediately the room is filled with a reverb heavy electric guitar melody floating over a driving acoustic rhythm that carries you to the first verse. The heavy acoustic presence over the otherwise electric song is reminiscent of a group like the Front Bottoms but the slower tempo and more relaxed pace allow for the scene to be set by lyrics as opposed to rushing from thought to thought.
Battagalia’s vocals in the verses are calm but determined, the tone of someone who has a message to get across. The vocals rest beautifully in the acoustic guitar before mixing with the rest of the instrumentals for the simple but ethereal chorus. The production, mixed with the driving beat conjures an image of the listener walking through a house, head bobbing, surrounded by music.

The lyrics to this track are simple but convey the complexities of revisiting someone whom you once cared for but have moved on from. In the song, the narrator visits the former friend or partner’s house twice to check in on them. Both times, the narrator is resolute in their dedication to putting themselves first. Battaglia is concise in his writing but that does not take away from the depth in the lyrics. This song is a gentle but solid reminder that although you may care for this person, it is important that you are taking away from you own needs, desires, or opportunities.

The growth that Idle Wave has shown since the beginning of their sonic journey is palpable and exciting. “My End” showcases a deep but catchy indie rock tune that will set the group up for further ambitious releases. If you are looking for a new jam for the commute or a song that empowers you to put yourself first, check out “My End” out now.
