SUB-RADIO
JUNE 23, 2021
SANTA ANA, CA
LIVE AT THE CONSTELLATION ROOM
PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALEXIA ABARCA
The past year has been quite unpredictable resulting in the whole world shutting down without a warning. I know a lot of us turned towards live shows as an escape from reality and have been waiting eagerly for the moment we are all able to see our favorite bands again. The return of live shows is still all too confusing, with COVID numbers starting to rise again. If you do choose to attend a show during these unpredictable months, please do so safely.
Outside of The Observatory in Santa Ana, just before doors opened on Friday night, there was a never-ending line of music lovers, an unfamiliar sight to see after the past year. I haven’t been to the Constellation Room in about 4 years, but seeing that part of the venue filled with people again felt euphoric.
As a photographer, I love capturing the raw passion and talent musicians exude when performing live. This is no different for D.C pop band Sub-Radio. The energy that vocalist Adam Bradley radiates was astronomical and easily transferred to every soul in that room. The high energy of the members easily got the crowd to fill The Observatory with cheers, or it was me hearing the room filled with screaming teenagers for One Direction Night taking place next door.
Either way, Sub-Radio put on an electric show and it felt like a good ‘welcome back to live music’ dance party for me.
I am always on my feet, trying to make sure I get the craziest shots, to the point where I can’t feel them the next day. Let me tell you, they hurt after this show. Sub-Radio’s set was filled with vivacity, which really helped me to capture the essence of their band through my photos.
It is still unsure to us what will happen to live music in the next following months, but we are praying for a safe return. Until then, please support your local and smaller artists by streaming and sharing their music, purchasing merch, or just by having a conversation with them on social media. With the enthusiasm Sub-Radio exuded on stage, I can say that I would definitely grab a ticket to go out and support them again.
