THE REGRETTES EXCITE FANS WITH THE RELEASE OF THEIR NEW SINGLE, "MONDAY"

Los Angeles based band, The Regrettes, dropped their newest single and music video on Friday, September 24th. The song is called “Monday”, and it’s about being anxious, and fed up with life causing so much stress. The Regrettes haven't released much since their last album How Do You Love?, other than a couple one-offs - “I Love Us” and “What Am I Gonna Do Today”. We got a taste of the direction their music will be heading in with those two songs, but with their newest single “Monday” it is clear this pop punk band has fully embraced a new pop sound.

The Regrettes are Lydia Night (vocals), Genessa Gariano (guitar), Brooke Dickson (bass), and Drew Thomson (drums). On their website, they describe their new music as “unapologetically pop songs”. “Monday” is a fun, energetic song with a dancey rhythm, lots of cheerful claping, and pop melodies. The song shares similarities of sound with pop music of the 90’s and 00’s, as well as some current pop artists like Charli XCX. Although The Regrettes are experimenting with a new sound, their angsty, and often quirky, lyrics written by singer Lydia Night are still here. In this particular song, she sings about her messy bedroom floor and about using her sinuses as an excuse to not feeling well.
To go along with the catchy song, a fun and eccentric music video was also produced. The music video features the band at a middle school dance, set with a photobooth, dance floor, a claymation scene, and famous pop star Olivia Rodrido as the Dj. Throughout the video a “pink Lydia” taunts the real Lydia as her anxiousness and worries personified. The first appearance of the pink version of her is when she’s getting ready for the dance while singing, “these growing pains, they push me ‘til I break” which ultimately leads her to “an existential crisis on Monday”.

The melody paired with the backup vocals of the song's chorus is extremely catchy. “Gottta get the fuck out of LA, run from the sun before it burns my brains” is the most fun lyric of the song. Lyrically, here is where she wants to run away, but also realizes that life’s not too bad. The last line in the chorus, and of the song, is a hopeful turn by saying, “hey, I’m still alive”.

Most of the time at the school dance Lydia is shown to be very scared and nervous, but when her pink version finally goes away she is able to let go and enjoy the dance with the rest of the band.

The Regrettes started as a unique pop-punk, almost riot girl sounding, band and have now fully transferred into the pop genre. Even though The Regrettes have changed their sound, they are still the same punks as before. Musicians should be allowed to drift from their original sound, and open themselves to new challenges and audiences. Experimenting with different musical sounds is cool. Having the courage to change musical paths, and not always sticking to the same sound, while not caring what people think is punk, too.
