On August 21st, Big Smile, a band from Cincinnati, Ohio, released their single ‘Killdozer,’ and this song can simply be described as amazing.
In their recent releases, Big Smile manages to make music using relatable pains and struggles, while managing to create a unique experience for their listeners. All our readers who have found ways to relate to the music they listen to, understand the importance of having meaningful lyrics, Big Smile goes above and beyond by making music to help cope and also giving us a modern and personal pop-punk/rock sound.

When I first heard ‘Killdozer,’ I felt like I could blast this in my car on a Monday morning and sing as loud as possible while still managing to find a meaning to the music being played. In this song, Big Smiles begin with a nostalgic vibe, a memorable moment in their life, which goes on to reminiscing times with someone.
Although there’s a shift later in the song, it introduces codependency as a relationship, instead of making the drug users menaces in society, it introduces businesses as the cause and more common drug use as an effect, a more modern philosophy we are introduced to.

“A taste of the haze prescribed ’til the pain ends [...] to treat a disease you were not diagnosed with” Killdozer, Big Smile 2020
The struggle that Big Smiles emphasizes with ‘Killdozer’ is drug use, but what really grabs your attention is the perspective of how society views drug use. As well as the commonality of replacing people with statistics in order to gain relevance in economic activity, in this case, drug use and how the economy profits from it. In fact, it brings up just how much society values profit provided by drug use.
“They profit more from disease than the cure”
Killdozer, Big Smile 2020
‘Killdozer’ brings up more about the social views of drug use, but instead of making it seem like societal marketing strategies, they discuss the codependency of coping and drugs. In fact, it applies to many of more modern things that are done to cope and how they seem odd to other generations. Big Smile related to how rare it is for things to be normalized, and how coping is a hard reality to grasp onto, but more importantly, how easy it is to get lost when coping.
“Prescription, Dependence, don’t seem all that different”
Killdozer, Big Smile 2020

Overall, ‘Killdozer’ brings thoughtful insights to how the world sees drug use today, and Big Smile deserves more recognition for their use of music to help the youth feel recognized and understood.
Big Smiles is definitely a band that I would recommend you add to your playlist, and give their new single ’Killdozer’ a listen while you’re at it… you never know, it might be your new favorite song.
