On July 24, 2020 Rancho Santa Margarita, California band Movements announced the release of their leading single “Don’t Give Up Your Ghost” off of their second full length record, titled “No Good Left To Give”, set to be released to the public on September 18, 2020. The announcement also showcased the premiere of their music video, along with a merch pre-order.

The quartet is made up of Patrick Miranda [vocalist], Ira George [guitar], Spencer York [drums], and Austin Cressey [bass]

Prior to the official announcement the band sent out postcards via the mail to select members of their mailing list. Featured on the the postcard were moments of what would become the cover art, and there were two word scrambles; one which looked like if you chose the correct letters, the words would jump right at (this revealed the single name), and the other one that would reveal a phone number, a hotline for fans to call. On the 18th we got our first glimpse, although we didn’t see the postcard a fan via Twitter posted a tweet that said “if you stan movements, dial (800) 595-0451”

When you called the phone number you were fed static, that every so often with breakthrough so you could hear the song play very faintly in the background, you can also hear a faint voice whisper “July 24th”. Another fan posted for those unable to call a clip of what the in call audio was  I was lucky enough to receive a postcard in the mail so here’s a photo of what it looks like!

Movements are not strangers when it comes to showcasing and marrying raw emotion and imagery into their music, they’re natural born storytellers; In “Don’t Give Up Your Ghost” they do just that. The song itself is very reminiscent to the music that they have put out in the past, with their debut album “Feel Something”, though there’s something about this record that gives me a feeling that we’re about to uncover a side of Movement we have yet to explore. A statement released by the band through their Facebook page states “Not only does the music address the emotional push-and-pull of relationships, but it also explores loss, love, mental health, and even intimacy through a prism of newfound clarity sound tracked by post-punk grit, alternative expanse, heartfelt spoken word, expansive rock, and subtle pop ambition.” As well as a statement made by vocalist of Movements Pat Miranda: “”Don’t Give Up Your Ghost” is told from the perspective of a person dealing with a friend who has confided that he or she has tried to kill him or herself.”

The song starts off with an eerie instrumental made by guitar, that gets followed by the daunting, yet gentle humming from a bass, mellow sounds from the drums, and a hunting piano which when you think about it, it sounds like an outcry of some sort, followed shortly after with dispirited vocals to add to the darkness of the track. there are parts throughout the song where the instrumentals dance between soft noise and the echoing of the lyric  which is repeated throughout the song multiple times, given the The track name “Don’t Give Up Your Ghost” feeding the emotion, emptiness; something we have yet to go onto depth with. Other lyrics that stand out throughout this track are  “Where’d you learn how to hate yourself?” and my personal favorite that stuck with me, as well as in true Movements fashion uses color to add depth to their ever so vivid imagery; “Can’t see the green underneath the snow, if you leave you’ll never know”

This may be the beginning for this era, but it’s a powerful first glimpse at what to expect in the future for Movements. I'm so impressed, and I'm excited to see what comes next for the band. Stream and watch the music video for “Don’t Give Up Your Ghost”, out now!
