NEW YOU RELEASES HIS ETHEREAL SINGLE, "SUFFER"
There’s a lot of new releases coming up, especially with concert dates being released, but a band you’ll definitely need to check out is New You. Blake Turner describes the Massachusetts project as his “poppy, fuzz-heavy alternative rock solo project.” After I checked them out, and listened to previously released music, I formed two opinions: one, New You is cool as fuck, and two, their music is amazing. I’ll let you all see the personality of New You by checking out their Twitter and BandCamp. Previously, New You released an album titled “New You,” which was released in April 2021 and consisted of 3 songs. This, which included a release of cassettes and pins, is the first introduction you should have to New You, simply because it’ll leave you wanting more from them.
Their recent album, which gives you a preview into the musical range of New You, has been on repeat this whole week, in fact I’ve added them to a lot of my playlists. This band is the perfect band to play throughout your summer, especially ‘Sunny Day. The best way to describe what this album makes me feel is, a 2000’s movie that emphasizes the rock scene at the time. Like a more mellow version of Simple Plan in the ‘New York Minute’ movie, still a truly upbeat and feel good song, with a modern twist introduced by Turner. I made an effort to listen to this album before checking out the new release, so I’ll move on to their new single and let you review their album on your own!
On July 15th, 2021, New You released their single “Suffer,” which is upbeat and lives up to the alt rock name. The single definitely sticks with their already established genre, lives up to the 90s and early 2000s movie feel, which I know many like. This song, although the title gives a lot of context as to what the song will be about, the single word doesn’t give justice to the emotions that are poured into this song. In fact, we were told by Turner that with this new single, he hopes to “retain[s] the pop-forward elements of the first EP, while introducing some heavy 90's alternative flavor.” We start off strong with a very 90s instrumental, mellowed out by Turner’s vocals, while retaining the older rock melody. However, the lyrics of the song share a comforting story of being alright even if suffering is all you know. I know that this will be added instantly to my Spotify playlists and I’ll have to see New You in concert one day.
