With their last record “Exercising Your Demons” being filled with instant classic tracks such as “Ikea Strikes Again,” “Who Let The Hawgz Out” and “New Vegas Bomb” you would imagine their sophomore record would be a tough act to follow. Not with the powerhouse that is CLIFFDIVER. All the potential we were introduced to through their previous record was pushed to the limit and put on full display for birdwatching. Instrumentally, vocally, lyrically Cliffdiver continues to evolve.
Birdwatching is something absolutely special. It spans a variety of genres, emotions, and stories between each and every track. From a day of unfortunate series of events, to an evening of endearment with someone special, or maybe even a night of deep introspection. You will be able to find yourself within this record.
Something that made Cliffdiver’s last record so special was the introduction of their vocalist Bri. In this new era we’re shown her full vocal range, from her higher pitched vocal coos in “thirty, flirty, and thriving!!!” to the raspy belting at the beginning of “dayz gone” and even diving into heavier screams in “would tho.” This also goes for Joey (co-vocalist) and becoming vulnerable on taking on a poetic spoken-word type track “Black Lodge Breakfast Burrito.”
There also seems to be a shift in lyrics content. In conjunction with “Exercising Your Demons” we get a few songs that are lyrically heavy such as “baby billy’s bible bonkers,” and we get a few tracks that are light-hearted and fun such as “thirty flirty and thriving!!!” However, birdwatching seems to revolve around the idea of love (platonic, romantic, etc.)
With lyrics such as:
“I'm stuck, nothing I can do
And I can't, stop thinking 'bout you
And the way that you laugh when you finish my jokes
And you were dead ass when you said I'm not a joke to you”
“Oh honey
You make me wanna be somebody
And even when you think I'm funny
I'm not a joke to you”
– “team fight tactic” - Cliffdiver
As well as
“In the name of love I lost an arm and a leg and more
In the name of love I gave all the flesh that you begged me for
In the name of love I let you swallow me alive
In the name of love I need to get away from you”
– “lord have mercer” - Cliffdiver
As mentioned before, Cliffdiver continue to deliver nothing short of special. We cant wait to see them take the world by storm and evolve as artists.
Be sure to immerse yourself into the record by hearing it live and in person! Cliffdiver will be hitting the road support Prince Daddy And The Hyena this October!
