Leicester’s up-and-coming trio, Mouth Culture, have graced us with five fresh new tracks in their new EP “Whatever The Weather.” Consisting of vocalist Jack Voss, bassist Todd Groome, and guitarist Mason Clifford, Mouth Culture continues to set the precedent for new alternative rock. While their debut EP “Mishaps Of My Mid Twenties” came off as an explosive collection to define their capabilities, this new EP begins to dig into their journey of sound exploration. Mouth Culture delivers solid rock music at the core, but with Whatever The Weather we are now given a garnish of indie, some hardcore, and even some classic string elements.
Beginning the EP strong with “Dead In Love” we are immediately hit with a more bouncy and light type of tune compared to what we’ve heard previously from these boys. The tinge of indie works well with this song not only instrumentally but also in conjunction to the lyrics. Throughout the track Jack Voss (vocalist) sings about life, love, and seemingly takes away the negative aspect of death so it is easier to use as a bartering tool.
“Oh god I think I'd
Die for you if you want me to
I’m six feet dead in love
The devil called he said he’s had enough
The skies have never looked so blue..”
– “Dead In Love"
As we transition to track 2, “No Shame” we are now given the opposite experience. The ambience of this song is a darker, more eerie feeling, but the chorus is still melodic and catchy. No Shame definitely gives off more hardcore tones especially with the inclusion of fry screams from Jack. This track has a lot of high energy, fan interactive, live potential.
We swing back into the indie rock realm with the next track, “Little Wednesday” with a solid opening that feels similar to the likeness of alternative band Bloc Party. This track comes off as an homage to Wednesday Addams and her disposition of being othered or proned to having a bad day.
“Happier” really hones in on their pop-punk/emo sensibilities, starting the track with generic pop punk guitar similar to All American Rejects or The Maine. Although Jack’s vocals play a huge role on all the songs, his voice is definitely brought to the forefront on this track; preparing us for the next track.
And to wrap up this cohesive record, we are given the beautiful closing track “Everyday.” This song begins slower than the other songs on this EP but eventually blossoms into a triumphant ethereal experience. The strings found within the background of the track bring out an atmospheric feeling; like floating in outer space, even following the lyrics “I feel like I’m in another dimension..”
This EP goes to show what this band is really capable of; straying away from what’s expected of them while also creating a household noise. Whatever proceeds for this band is going to be phenomenal. We can already see Mouth Culture making waves in the alternative scene and bringing out fresh new sounds across the globe.
