SO BADLY DEBUTS THEIR DREAMY NEW ALBUM LEMON BLUE

Picture
It’s no doubt that dream pop has one of the most unique sounds in the alt rock scene. It is known for its dense guitar riffs and ethereal vocals. Virginia based, So Badly, doesn’t stray far from that vibe. These east coast natives released their hazy debut album Lemon Blue. The starry-eyed band formed in 2017, and began writing songs in a crammed college apartment, only the best songs come out of places like that. So Badly started their first LP in early 2020.

This record reminds me a bit of former dream pop band “Lush.” Everything on the record is so mesmerizing and takes existential dream pop to another level! This is a record I can see being played during a late night drive or even just laying under the night sky to ponder. The album's lead single “Harley Davidson” is a jaded, existential love song addressed to someone from a past life. The matter of fact chorus in which “things don’t always come together” sits in disparity with the winding, confessional verses, a tension which resists resolution to the last note.

The first track “Tell Me” opens with mellow guitar riffs and soft, breathy vocals that left me enthralled. This track was one of the tracks I fell in love with. I loved how the drums lightly took you into the opening lyrics “take off my glasses so I can't see the world”.

The following track “Snowboard” starts off at a faster pace rather than the previous track. “Snowboard” starts off with upbeat drums and lively, mellifluous guitar riffs. This track ends with the lyrics “maybe we can snowboard” and fades out with giggling.
Next in line, “Blue” starts off with bass-lines and easy going drums and the distinctive, dreamy vocals delivered by Grace Howie. I’m just so infatuated with this album and I want to quote what one fan said about “Lemon Blue” because it could not have been worded better, “infectious is a word I would use. like you hear one of these tracks and it just sticks all over you.”

The record continues to flow out beautifully and perfectly intertwines the last five tracks. Lemon Blue is what I like to describe as a masterpiece. The record perfectly blends joyful and melancholic vibes together, and leaves you practically begging for more. And that is exactly what it has left us doing. We can't wait to hear more from So Badly, and whenever that may be, we will be placing it on repeat 24/7.
