STUCK OUT DIVULGE ABOUT THE CREATIVE PROCESS BEHIND THEIR LATEST SINGLE "WHO YOU ARE"
INTERVIEWED BY EMILY HARRIS
Australian-natives, Stuck Out, are redefining their sound and the scene around them with their newest release, “Who You Are.” The single, following the release of their EP You Won’t Come Home in 2018, is a new direction for the four-piece. We sat down with John to discuss the project and what is to come!
Can you tell us a little bit about the writing and recording process of your last single, “Who You Are?”
What was the creative process like for shooting the music video for “Who You Are” as well?
- We tend to write songs individually and come together at the end to refine them however “Who Your Are” was the first song that we really wrote together from the beginning, it's definitely an even spread of our ideas. We recorded the single with Jack Newlyn (Paradise Club) and he really put the finishing touches on the song, letting each element of the song shine when it's the right time for it
What was the creative process like for shooting the music video for “Who You Are” as well?
- The funny thing is we only had 4 hours to shoot the vid so it was a bit of a scramble. We hired this place but they could only let us use it on a Sunday morning so we rocked up (after a bit of drinking the night before) and just sped through it to get as much content as we could. In the end it worked out pretty well
This was your first release back since your single “Everything You Wanted” in 2019. How has your writing changed since that single came out?
As a four-piece, have you found it difficult to find a sound you’re each proud of?
Reigning from Australia, how has the alternative scene there influenced the music you create?
What are some of your ultimate goals as a band?
- Definitely more collaborative. Coming to each other for ideas DURING the writing process rather than at the end definitely opens up a lot more possibilities for where the song can go.
As a four-piece, have you found it difficult to find a sound you’re each proud of?
- Not really, we definitely have different ideas when it comes to writing music but at the end of the day we're quite agreeable with each other. We're good mates so if something sounds like shit we'll just come out and say it then head back to the drawing board.
Reigning from Australia, how has the alternative scene there influenced the music you create?
- The Australian alternative scene is definitely a strong community. Everyone has a lot of love for each other and newer acts are definitely looked out for and often taken under the wings of the bigger bands which is really cool. There's definitely a lot of amazing Aussie bands that haven't quite been picked up overseas so having their music as an influence gives Australian bands a bit of a unique twist
What are some of your ultimate goals as a band?
- We definitely want to tour the EU or US at some point. Travelling through a foreign country in a van with your mates is the dream.
What song would you recommend someone to listen to get into your music? Why?
Have you been writing new music lately? If so, what’s been inspiring you? Can we expect some new music from you soon?
Is there anything you want to say to the fans?
- “Who You Are,” it's our latest release and overall a very well-rounded representation of who we are.
Have you been writing new music lately? If so, what’s been inspiring you? Can we expect some new music from you soon?
- We actually have our next release recorded and ready to go, just waiting for a few things to line up and we can release it for the whole wide world! We definitely went into this record thinking of our live performance. We want our sound to be aggressive and powerful, the kind of thing that makes you want to see it in the flesh.
Is there anything you want to say to the fans?
- We've been a bit quiet but we're still kicking! We'll have something for you all before this year's out!
