SUNTITLE LEAVE FANS IN A DREAMLIKE STATE WITH THE RELEASE OF THEIR NEW ALBUM 'IN A DREAM'
With members living across New Jersey, Massaschucetts, and Pennsylvania, the North Eastern alternative emo band Suntitle released their debut album In a Dream on November 12th. The album was produced in Nashville by Tate Mercer, and will be released through Know Hope Records. Suntitle has been a band for half a decade, and have two previously released EPs, so it was only time for a full-length album. The new album demonstrates the experience of five years with a sense of maturity and growth from their preceding work. This album compares to music of the post-hardcore scene like Balance and Composure, Basement, Citizen, etc, but makes the genre their own. In a Dream is an anthemic collection of songs which blends genres across the rock spectrum, emoting a hazy feeling of literally being in a dream-like state.
The album leads with the song “Impermanence”, a deep song about the fear of fading away. The song begins slow, with the vocals floating around the soft plucking of a guitar, then it picks up in volume and tempo revealing the upcoming work to be a heavy, hardcore/ alternative album. The effects on this song (and as it’s continued throughout the whole album) really do add a subtitle dream-like state. Suntitle definitely achieves their amazing sound and emotional record by allowing the tonality of the album to speak for itself.

Other stand out titles of the album that are influenced by the idea of tonality creating emotion are “Mile Marker” and “Heaven’s Gate”. The beginning of “Mile Marker” hits you with sadness from the slow, guitar riff and rhythm, as well as the tone of every instrument and the vocals. Even without the lyrics, this song would feel so deep, dark, and heavy. The following song, “Heaven’s Gate” is another deep, dark, heavy song that amps up the emotional anger of loss instead of sadness. Although the track is short, the emotion that was put into this song is obvious right from the start.
This emotional album also has really fun tracks that would make perfect energetic, crowd pleasing points of live performances. Suntitle’s first single off the album “Burning Down a Denny’s” is one of those fun songs. Proving the record has a variety of influences, this song about the desire of being loved and loving someone in return is a blend of 90’s alternative rock and grunge styles. Other heavy hitters of the album include “Selfish” and “Sway” that are just waiting to be thrashed around to at a future show.
Another single, and a personal favorite of In a Dream, is “Royal Blue” which incorporates a mix of genres, too. This is probably the catchiest song of the album as far as the lyrics, and the longer the song plays, the more layered and composed it becomes. The strong, powerful moments fuse together elements of hardcore and punk. There’s a breakdown in the song that sounds very much like Turnstile, and it is perfectly placed into this beautiful song.
In a Dream is a stand out album of 2021. If you were pleased by their previously released singles, the rest of the album definitely will not disappoint. The small genre bending and/or fusing moments are what really make it interesting and fun to listen to, and what sets Suntitle apart from others in the post-hardcore scene.
