WHY NOT ARE ON THE PATH TO REDEFINING THE INDUSTRY WITH THEIR NEW EP "VERY WHY NOT"

Picture
Reigning from Minneapolis, WHY NOT is a three-piece band working to redefine the industry they’re rising within. Composed of Henry Green, Isaac Dell, and Joshua MacGrego, WHY NOT has just released their new EP, so accurately, VERY WHY NOT. The five track EP is simultaneously an ode to the Twin Cities that shaped them, as seen in the papa mbye and Lupin features, and an ode to the genre-bending of the industry today. Their previously released single, which sits in the middle of the EP, “Casket,” is a strong way to fall in love with the band and the sounds they’ve been creating.

The EP starts off with “Mothballs,” a song that opens with a minute-long interlude that prepares you for the rest of the EP. It brings the blend of multiple genres to the forefront of the listeners ears. With an easily noted craft for production, WHY NOT starts off the EP with a strong song, even if it is the shortest on the release.

Following closely after is “Barely Anymore,” a track in a totally different direction. It’s that usual feel-good, pop vibe that so many listeners can find themselves in. Seemingly made to be played live, the track has a catchy chorus and stuck-in-your-head riff that is bound to affect festival crowds one day. With a full sound and clear production-direction, this song is a clear callback to the earlier additions to the punk genre on pop culture in the mid 2000s.

The middle of the EP sits the three minute and thirty-five minute track “Casket.” With a feature from Papa Mbye, the song is a letter to the Minneapolis music scene that connects them all. In a slower direction, the lyrics evidently sit upon an almost lo-fi track. The introduction of Papa Mbye brings a soulful, eclectic vibe to the song- which evidently helps to round out the EP as a whole. Featuring another catchy chorus and groovy rhythmic section, “Casket” serves as the perfect mid-point to the work. It’s also the track the band released as a single- for obvious reasons.
The fourth track, “We Can Be Always” features another Minneapolis artist, Lupin. This track is unlike anything before it. With a heavy voice-effect presence and a trap beat, its evident the band loves to play around with every style under the sun. Their multiple musical influences take a strong hold on this song in particular, it blends the things the band excels at, as evident in the previous three tracks, and matches it with the new addition of stronger production than before.
The final track of the EP is “The Boys.” Beginning with a deep, almost gospel beginning, the song quickly kicks into the sound the band has been perfecting. With strong vocals, easily connectable lyrics, and yet another catchy rhythm, “The Boys” perfectly ties the bow “Mothball” starts creating.
