7/18/20   Written By Lou Watson

On July 16th Doncaster born Dominic Harrison, famously known as Yungblud, released his single “Strawberry Lipstick” his second single leading to his upcoming album. Teased since July 6th, the anticipation of the album was well worth it. The new bright red liberty spikes, his Bulldog companion, and the Union Jack flag dress on the cover of this single, only lead us to believe that Dominic is ready to reinvent British Punk music.

This track is very different from what Dominic has ever put out. Clearly, he’s gotten in touch with his pop rock and hiphop-esque background in previous albums/eps, but we’ve never seen something this solid from him. On his radio show, Strawberry Lipstick Radio, he refers to this track as “Braindead but 10 times harder.’

Musically, this single is different from what’s being put out in the world. We’d see music like this in the more hard rock world, a part of the world that hasn’t seen Yungblud in his glory. But, this track is going to change that. The beginning of the track immediately struck us with Bikini Kill vibes as he gives us a raw microphone feedback cut before getting into the Instrumental, just as Bikini Kill did in their song “Double Dare Ya” Getting deeper into the track; We immediately get Sex Pistol vibes. The drums and overall tempo pays homage to more slow tempo punk such as L7, The Runaways, etc. While the hook's voice is reminiscent of Johnny Rotten.. Kicking it back to his roots. Dare I say, this is his best work so far.

Dominic has never shied away from expressing his sexuality. Between speaking through interviews about his sexuality, challenging gender roles, and even lyrics such as “Polly, I just wanna suck on your lolly..” from his song Die For The Hype. He’s been quite vocal about it, but this track takes it to the next level. With lyrics like “She’s gonna suck on my strawberry lipstick” and “She’s gonna taste my body with her fingertips” loads of other euphemisms.

Though originally we were already excited for his sophomore album, this single really solidifies the type of change Yungblud is ready to bring to the table and his statement “It’s time to step out of the 21st Century” signifies this change. We have a feeling this album is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever heard from him, and we are well prepared.
