REVIEW: Save Face Reinvigorate The Rock Scene With The Release of Their Thrilling Single "Sharpen Your Teeth"
We are no strangers to Save Face. They’re one of the most thrilling bands to begin blooming out of the New Jersey scene. They particularly caught our eye as the music video for their track “GLITTER” made rounds through the DIY twitterverse.
To ignite the fire their new album, Another Kill For The Highlight Reel, is projected to bring, “Sharpen Your Teeth" is an impenetrable flame full of fiery angst; a perfect precursor to the savory record that we are waiting with baited breath for.
Save Face are not strangers when it comes to showcasing raw and emotional passion within their records. The heavy vocals that launch the track into action beguile us from the very beginning, leaving us intertwined in the melodic yet enchanting vocals and piquant riffs. Met with the immediate crashing of the drums, and harsh bellow from Povanda right off the bat. It’s quick, panicky and yet.. theatrical. Which isn’t surprising considering Povanda’s love for theatrical music. The track dies down slightly, but doesn’t stay that way for long. We’re actually taken through drastic changes in rhythm throughout the song; keep us all on our toes. Again, clueing back to theatrics, they take us through different scenes through mini ballads. To wrap up, we’re thrown back into a tornado of pure rock we found initially before the track cuts abruptly after the lyrics “So, what does a ghost like you do in a place like... this?”

In the middle of the initial playthrough, I realized that this track was not going to be the conventional lyricism of metaphorical melancholia, hoping people will relate to it just because it sounds sad, it was much more than that. The song holds true to its title, as it maliciously enchants you to keep listening, flowing seamlessly through the track, finally reaching the breakdown where I quite literally lost my shit. If you see me in the pit, move. This has been a warning. I will sharpen my teeth and start biting.
To much excitement, Save Face have taken elements from their previous releases and constructed it into something completely new. With the release of “Sharpen Your Teeth", Save Face barter their usual melancholic assets for a more hardcore vibe. Although the single has its own unique sound, I can’t help but draw comparisons between this single and works from The Used circa 2004, or the theatrical works of My Chemical Romance. There’s a beautiful balance between the boisterous high-pitched vocals mixed with the dramatic, anthemic instrumentals. It’s a melodic science, and clearly Save Face have their PhDs in it.
Another Kill For The Highlight Reel comes out Oct 29 on Epitaph. It’s a nostalgic love letter to the Jersey scene of the early 2000s It’s a swing-for-the-fences album that will amaze and alienate in equal measure. We’re super stoked to check out the rest of the album, and where Save Face will go in the future.
