REVIEW: New Voluntary Hazing video explores the question: "Why are you in a Ska band?"

Formed in San Jose, California, Voluntary Hazing is a 12-piece ska and pop punk band. These California rockers just released a new music video for their single “Why,” which had all of us here at Punkaganda dancing our *asses* off. If you’re into ska or are looking for a new genre to explore I highly recommend checking out Voluntary Hazing.

Originally released in January on their EP “Crossroads,” “Why” recounts negative comments the band has received from Ska naysayers, while also celebrating the genre and making nods to other musical influences. The upbeat record was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely by the band, which makes their music even more enjoyable as it comes from the heart.

The video itself is composed of pre-pandemic band footage that expresses how thankful they are for friendship, music, and the amazing ska artists that have paved the way before Voluntary Hazing. From the heart-warming footage, upbeat rhythm sections, and heartfelt music production, Voluntary Hazing filled our hearts with joy just as much as the 12-pieced rockers fill a stage.

With the rise in popularity ska has been receiving lately, we can’t wait to see what Voluntary Hazing has hidden up their sleeves.
