Good Sleepy returns with unapologetically vulnerable and aggressive record: ‘Constant Humming’
Good Sleepy’s return isn’t just a comeback, it’s their leaping headfirst into a new era. Nearly 5 years since their last full-length album, the Massachusetts based emo outfit has dropped their new record, Constant Humming.
Through the album, it’s obvious the band channeled that time into creating something heavier, darker, louder and more alive than anything before. Through each track on the record, the sound jumps into a pool of emo heartbreak and hardcore rage, and it sticks the landing perfectly.
Starting out with “All At Once,” the opening hits you just the same – all at once. With ear-wormy riffs and pummeling drums, the track make you want to flip off of a stage into a crowd. The teeth-chattering rhythm creates a tension that pulls you into the rest of the record.
Tracks like “Trap” wear the familiar emo markings that Good Sleepy fans know and love. Weaving through punchy riffs and sludgy undertones, the song bridges the old and new sounds of the band. Meanwhile “ZZZ” leans deeper into a hardcore sound, showing the darker side this record brings out.
“Inception” closes out the record, with gut-punching drums and twinkling guitar. The longest track on the album, it ends the album in a dreamlike state. A crescendo, the song displays the bands ability to turn a melodic whisper into something more like a yell.
There’s absolutely a sadness in the record, but within that, there’s a grit and perseverance to push past comfortability that bleeds through. Heavier influences show through the relentless guitar and hard-hitting drums, but the band never abandons the original, twinkly emo riffs remembered from past releases.
Constant Humming is a record that feels both lived in and alive. Heavy and vulnerable and unapologetically raw, the album is one that should be listened to start to finish.
