REVIEW: YNES Releases Highly Anticipated Single "God's Little Punching Bag"

As her Spotify profile states, “English-Canadian YNES takes inspiration both from the North American post-punk scene and the more polished sounds of early 2000's Britpop. It's this fusion of influences that lends to YNES' signature britpop-punk sound.” I listened to her recent releases before I built up the courage to listen to the new release with an awesome title. Her most recent release before this was “Used to Be” which was released May 14, 2021. YNES has been hard at work with the release of 2 singles in the past 6 months and an EP released late December 2020.

On August 6, 2021, YNES released yet another single, this one titled ‘God’s Little Punching Bag.’ Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I love songs with interesting titles, which is what originally drew me to this review. I was especially excited when I saw that the single, released via GRRRL GROANNN, was detailed as “three and a bit minutes of opening your arms and saying "do your f*cking worst”.

The song lives up to the genres that YNES uses to describe her music, and it lives up to all the expectations that I had set in my head with the title. Compared to her previous release, this song is a lot more upbeat with the instrumental choice, the background music contrasts heavily between both songs. This release also empowers all that is imperfect, in fact it’s very empowering to dealing with the hardships of life.

“The outcasts have always been empowered, I just didn't know it then. I used to welcome pity for living a life less than perfect, and I embraced my fate as a basketcase. In whatever form the universe throws you a punch to the face, GLPB is the anthemic angst that shrugs "what, you expected me to cry?"

This description is the best way to put this masterpiece of a song, the more I listen to the single I feel more inclined to call it one of my favorites. The song is YNES stating that no matter what hurtful comments are thrown at her, she won‘t let them get to her, and an anthem to shake off the hate you receive and move on.

I’ll be listening to YNES non-stop for the next few days, and I can’t wait to see what future releases we get. You’re able to listen to her newest single “God’s Little Punching Bag” on all streaming applications now!
